Biography description

Matthew Smith engages in a broad and energetic commercial litigation practice, representing a diverse range of clients across various industries, before all levels of court in Ontario. Matthew handles cases involving shareholder oppression, breach of contract, fraud, debt-recovery, receiverships, injunctions, class actions, economic torts, defamation, files with an insolvency nexus, and everything in between. Regardless of the context, Matthew’s clients come to appreciate his responsive, cerebral, and collaborative approach to finding practical, business-oriented, and cost-effective solutions to their most pressing legal issues.

Matthew is a member of several regional law associations and societies, and enjoys volunteering his time on pro bono matters, on peer and student mentorship, and with a local legal clinic.

Matthew is born-and-raised at Miller Thomson, beginning his career as a summer law student in 2017, before returning as an associate in 2019, and joining the partnership in 2026. Throughout, Matthew has seen success on numerous matters, from large and notable, to small and confidential, and everything in between.
