City of Waterloo finalizes land transfer to Habitat Waterloo Region/BUILD NOW

Counsel to BUILD NOW with respect to its finalized land transfer for city-owned land at 2025 University Avenue East

In June 2025, the City of Waterloo finalized an agreement to transfer city-owned land at 2025 University Avenue East for one of the largest and most ambitious affordable housing projects in Canada.

This location will become the site of a transformational development, where Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region/BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region (Habitat Waterloo Region/BUILD NOW) will deliver 1,000 new affordable and attainable homes. This significant step for Waterloo’s Affordable Housing Strategy is made possible in part by funding from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund.

Founded in 1988, Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region is a charitable organization working toward a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

BUILD NOW: Waterloo Region, an initiative led by Habitat Waterloo Region, is a modernization of Canada’s wartime housing program, offering a combination of affordable rental and home ownership opportunities as a plan to help solve the national housing crisis. BUILD NOW is an ambitious housing project that aims to provide 10,000 units of missing middle homes across Waterloo region by 2030.

Miller Thomson advised BUILD NOW with a team comprised of Dwayne Kuiper (Corporate & Real Property), Michael L. Walker (Transactions & Leasing), Rebekah Timm (Social Impact), Thomas Sanderson (Municipal), Ron Choudhury (Tax) and Greg Bush (Labour and Employment).
