Overview

With over 35 years of transaction and litigation experience, Kent Anderson advises on all aspects of business, corporate, environmental, and oil and gas law. His extensive litigation experience includes trial and appellate courts, regulatory boards, and commercial arbitration with an emphasis on technical, scientific, financial, and accounting matters. Kent’s clients include oil and gas producers, agri-businesses, local and global product and service suppliers to the resource extraction industries, and other businesses.

In 1987, Kent became a founding partner and the initial managing partner of the Calgary office of our predecessor firm. He later led our Calgary litigation practice and then our Calgary corporate practice. From 2009 to 2013 he was the managing partner of Miller Thomson’s Calgary office and a member of the firm’s National Executive Committee.

Kent’s legal expertise includes:

Business:  advising established and start-up businesses, both public and private, on corporate structure; commercial transactions; asset and share purchases; sales, equity and debt financing; debt restructuring; and intellectual property protection.

Environmental: advising on regulatory compliance, operating permits, and remediation and reclamation of contaminated sites; he also represents and advocates for clients before environmental regulators.

Oil and gas:  advising on asset purchases and sales, regulatory compliance issues, operating issues and agreements, and dispute resolution in the upstream oil and gas business.

Commercial litigation: representing and advocating for clients on commercial, oil and gas, environmental, financial, and corporate matters in provincial and federal courts, regulatory tribunals, and commercial arbitration.

Before he became a lawyer, Kent spent several years in the oil and gas industry, gaining valuable upstream experience. From 1976 to 1981, Kent worked in the Calgary and Edmonton sales offices of a major international pumping services company that designed and sold hydraulic fracturing services (fracking). He co-developed some of the first computer simulation programs used in the fracking industry. Earlier in his career, Kent worked on drilling rigs and in seismic field operations, giving him a strong working knowledge of field operations. He has maintained a keen interest in oilfield technology development throughout his legal career.

Kent’s undergraduate education was focused in the sciences and included studies in computer science, geology, physics and chemistry.

Kent has been a founder, shareholder, director and investor in several research and technology development projects in specialized oilfield services and medical robotics.
