London Student Programs

Hiring

Miller Thomson’s London office hires two students who have completed their second year of law school for our summer program.

Student Experience

Our summer program allows our students to experience the working environment at our firm before starting the articling year. There is no formal rotation over the summer. Our students handle a variety of assignments, ranging from research, drafting documents and assisting with litigation and corporate transactions.

Our students are always welcome to join our lawyers and observe proceedings. Since we do not have a formal work allocation system, our students are encouraged to be entrepreneurial and to seek work and experiences of interest to them. In this way, our program provides our students with a greater insight into Miller Thomson and the practice of law.

Members of the Student Committee are also on-hand to help our students through the summer.

Feedback

We encourage our students to take ownership of their work, and to seek feedback from the lawyers they are working with on a continuing basis.

Professional Development

In addition to various assignments our students will be engaged in, our office offers training in substantive law and practical skills-based training. Some highlights of our students continuing legal education programming include seminars on Small Claims Court proceedings, drafting pleadings, legal research, legal writing, motions, corporate services, litigation, professionalism, practice management and public speaking.

Hiring

The London office generally hires two students for its articling program.

Student Experience

Our students are exposed to a wide variety of experiences during his or her articling year. Our students are given the opportunity to, among other things, assist and accompany lawyers to discoveries, hearings, trials, mediations, commercial deal closings and client meetings. Our students also assign and have full carriage of Small Claims Court files.

Social Events

We encourage our students to participate in all aspects of firm life, including the firm’s social activities and student-specific activities through the local law associations.

Mentoring

As part of our support structure, our articling students are paired with a partner who acts as an articling principal. Other members of the Student Committee also act as resources and liaisons to our student.

Feedback

We evaluate our student’s progress through a formal evaluation process, which occurs mid-way through the articling program term (usually in January).

Professional Development

Throughout articling, our students will continue his or her professional development with additional continuing legal education programs designed specifically for him or her. As in the summer program, our students are invited to attend all firm-wide and practice-specific continuing legal education programs.

Our students are available to answer any questions you may have about our summer and articling student programs.
