Special guests Murray Johnson, Vice President, Client Operations at Crossbridge Condominium Services and Michele Farley, President and Senior Fire Code Consultant at FCS Consulting Services Ltd. joined Miller Thomson’s Condominium lawyers to talk fire code compliance.

A growing number of municipalities have begun an inspection blitz to ensure compliance with relevant fire legislation. Municipal Fire Services have, in some instances, taken a zero tolerance approach. There are big penalties for non-compliance. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

During our session, we tacked the following list of questions and a host of other related issues:

  • What are the fire code obligations of the Board and Property Management?
  • Who is responsible for compliance?
  • Who should maintain smoke alarms?
  • What fire safety records are to be maintained?
  • How often should the fire safety plan be updated?
  • How do you respond to a contravention?
