Providing national reach to Canada’s leading natural resource economic driver

Miller Thomson's move into Saskatchewan earmarks a time of remarkable economic growth in that province, making it a significant player in the Canadian economy. Saskatchewan is the largest potash producer in the world, accounting for 30 percent of total production and hosting approximately 50 percent of the world’s potash reserves. Canada’s highest grade uranium is produced in Saskatchewan and the province will also soon become the largest producer of conventional oil in the country.

The 2011 merger with Balfour Moss, one of Saskatchewan’s oldest and most established law firms, is one in a series of strategic mergers designed to extend and deepen Miller Thomson’s national reach.

The firm built its reputation serving financial institutions and representing a wide range of clients in joint ventures, financings, partnerships, shareholder agreements and other forms of commercial contracts. Our Saskatchewan offices represent a diverse and varied array of clients, including institutional lenders, local national and international businesses and is active in the real estate development sector, franchising, criminal law, mergers and acquisitions and environmental law and regulation. Strong litigation and administrative law practices have become our signature.

With roots running over 100 years deep, members of the office have achieved eminent distinctions. Two former members are currently Justices of the Court of Queen’s Bench for Saskatchewan and two others are retired Justices of that Court. Two others are Justices of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. One former member was a Senator and previous to that served as a Member of Parliament. Two former members have held seats in Saskatchewan’s Legislative Assembly and one other has served as Mayor of Regina. We are proud of this recognition and of the people who made it possible.

James Balfour, K.C. founded the firm with an aim to serve the needs of the growing agricultural community.

Reginald M. Balfour, Q.C., brought his skill as an advocate to his father’s law firm.
