The Government of Canada has recently announced the establishment of the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. The Government will contribute one dollar to this Fund for every eligible dollar donated by individual Canadians to Canadian registered charities that are receiving donations in response to the humanitarian crisis related to the impact of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and other affected countries.

The Fund is managed and administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD). In order to qualify for the matching program, a donation must meet the following criteria:

  • must be made by an individual Canadian
  • must be monetary, not exceeding $100,000 per individual
  • must be made to a registered Canadian charity that is receiving donations in response to the impact of Typhoon Haiyan
  • must be specifically earmarked by the donor for the response to Typhoon Haiyan, and
  • must be made between November 9 and December 23, 2013.

Charities that are declaring eligible donations are required to submit a Typhoon Haiyan Relief Matching Fund Declaration Form to DFATD, in order for the Government to match these donations.  The form is available on the DFATD website.  The form must be submitted no later than January 10, 2014.

Charities declaring eligible donations will not directly receive matching contributions from the Government of Canada.  The government contributions will be made to the Fund, which is administered by the DFATD.  The Government has stated that the Fund will be used to support the work of experienced Canadian and international humanitarian organizations.  Allocation will be based on DFATD’s humanitarian assistance guidelines. Organizations with significant in-country capacity to respond to the crisis and deliver humanitarian assistance can submit proposals for support from the Fund.

Details on the program are available on the DFATD website.  Charities engaged in Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts can further assist people affected by this disaster by taking part in this government program.
