Michael Chan serves as a Senior Business Advisor for Miller Thomson LLP. Michael's experience in business and government, as well as his respected public profile, enhances a team that is passionate about its pledge to deliver client service excellence.
Prior to joining Miller Thomson, Michael had a distinguished career in public service as a member of the Ontario Legislature for eleven years. First elected in 2007, and re-elected three times before retiring in April 2018, Michael served continuously as a Cabinet Minister in portfolios that included Revenue, Citizenship and Immigration, Tourism, Culture and Sport, and International Trade.
As Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Michael was responsible for expanding Ontario’s Provincial Nominee Program by offering permanent residency to international students who had attained post-graduate degrees at Ontario publicly-funded universities.
During his tenure as Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Michael initiated a plan for the closure and subsequent revitalization of Ontario Place. He reorganized the Niagara Parks Commission, returning it to a profit-making enterprise and renewing the Niagara region as a premier tourist destination. Michael provided strong leadership by championing continued support through government incentives for Ontario’s entertainment and creative cluster, including the film, television, publishing, music, commercial theatre and interactive digital media industries. Michael also created the Ontario Music Fund to help build the province as a worldwide music capital.
As Minister of International Trade, Michael promoted trade across Ontario and led numerous trade missions around the globe to Mexico, Germany, China, India, the United Kingdom and other countries, identifying possibilities and securing international in-bound investments that spurred job growth at home.
Michael currently serves as a Member of the Board of Governors of Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology.
