Emily Compton is a lawyer in Miller Thomson’s litigation practice group, working primarily in employment law and insurance defence. Emily joined Miller Thomson as an associate after working as a summer student and articling student with the firm. Emily is a direct communicator, creative thinker, and skilled researcher who believes in providing practical and professional service to her clients.

Through her broad litigation practice, she has diligently represented clients at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Small Claims Court, Social Security Tribunal, Human Rights Tribunal, Licence Appeal Tribunal and has assisted as junior counsel to matters at the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Emily provides legal services in the following areas:

Employment law: advising and advocating for clients with respect to employment standards, contracts, termination, human rights, and workplace investigations.

Insurance litigation: advocating in the defence of casualty, life, disability and property claims, and statutory and policy compliance.

General litigation: advocating for clients in a broad variety of formal Court, Tribunal, and Alternative Dispute Resolution settings.

In 2018, Emily graduated from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law where she was a dedicated community member. She worked as a research assistant to the Associate Dean, focusing on administrative law, conflict of laws, intellectual property, and legal history. She served as a project supervisor and coordinator for Pro Bono Students Canada, providing free legal help in an online forum pilot project. Emily was also a finals medalist in the UBC Environmental Law Negotiation Competition. In her final year of law school, she was awarded the McLean Scholarship for her thesis paper.

Prior to her legal education, Emily studied History at the University of Guelph for both her bachelor and master’s degrees.
