Aperçu
Caroline Kim takes a compassionate and common-sense approach to the resolution of family law disputes. Caroline assists people before and after a marriage or common-law relationship, providing advice and representation for “pre-nups” (pre-nuptial agreements) as well as custody, access, support, and property claims. Caroline is experienced in assisting high net-worth clients with complex property and corporate assets, family-owned businesses and trusts, as well as having experience in high-conflict situations and amicable settlements through negotiation, mediation and collaborative practice. Caroline provides services in English and French.
Where possible, Caroline works with her clients to negotiate separation agreements through their lawyers or in mediation. Where negotiated solutions cannot be found, Caroline ably represents her clients’ interests at court.
Prior to joining Miller Thomson, Caroline worked at the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic in Toronto, where she exclusively represented women survivors of domestic abuse and gained extensive experience working on high-conflict cases with complex factual circumstances.
Caroline’s experience includes:
Alternative dispute resolution: representation, advice, and advocacy for negotiations, mediations, and arbitration processes that are completed outside of the court system.
Collaborative Practice: representation in a team-based approach to negotiation, with financial and family professionals as necessary, where parties are committed to an out-of-court resolution.
Family law litigation: representation at the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice in all family law matters.
High-conflict situations: knowledge and ability to handle complex matters requiring ex parte or urgent motions and experience negotiating custody and access arrangements in high-conflict situations.
In addition to her family law practice, Caroline is an instructor for the Diploma in Mental Health Law and Human Rights offered by the ILS Law College in conjunction with the World Health Organization. Since 2010 she has travelled yearly to Pune, India, where she and her colleagues teach a diverse group of medical and legal professionals about disability rights and international mental health law and policy.
Prior to studying law, Caroline completed an M.Sc. at McGill University where she studied suicide and mental health.
Caroline is a board member of the Sexual Assault Services Centre of Waterloo Region.
