On the evening of April 6, 2013, Bob Berry with Miller Thomson’s Guelph office, attended the graduation ceremony and banquet for Class 14 of the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP) run by the Rural Ontario Institute. AALP brings together 30 young people from various agricultural backgrounds across Ontario for an intense 18 month course, including weekend seminars addressing topics ranging from general agricultural knowledge to the development of personal leadership skills.
The course includes tours of farms and other agricultural/agribusiness operations in North America and internationally. This year’s tours included visits to the New York and Pennsylvania, meetings with Canadian and U.S. agricultural officials in Washington DC, and an international study tour of India complete with a blog of the tour.
The ages of those enrolled in AALP ranges from late 20s to early 40s and consists of a mix of primary producers, government agency and Crown Corporation employees, bankers, middle managers in agribusiness and entrepreneurs. The goal of the program is to increase the pool of leaders and to provide them with networking opportunities in order to influence and develop the agricultural industry in Ontario and across Canada.
This year’s grads were an impressive group and Miller Thomson is proud to be a sponsor and supporter of the program. Applications are now being accepted for Class 15 which will start in September 2013 and run to March 2015.
