{"id":5979,"date":"2021-09-21T14:32:21","date_gmt":"2023-08-12T08:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.millerthomson.com\/ontario-government-extends-temporary-layoff-provisions-and-paid-idel\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T15:45:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:45:49","slug":"ontario-government-extends-temporary-layoff-provisions-and-paid-idel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.millerthomson.com\/en\/insights\/labour-and-employment\/ontario-government-extends-temporary-layoff-provisions-and-paid-idel\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario government extends temporary layoff provisions and paid IDEL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ontario Government has extended the maximum period of COVID-related temporary layoffs until January 1, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pursuant to Ontario Regulation 228\/20 (the \u201cIDEL Regulation\u201d), during the \u201cCOVID-19 period,\u201d employees are deemed to be on a job-protected Infectious Disease Emergency Leave (\u201cIDEL\u201d) when their hours of work are temporarily reduced or eliminated by their employer for reasons related to COVID-19. The IDEL Regulation states that such reductions do not constitute constructive dismissal during the COVID-19 period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the COVID-19 period was previously set to expire on September 25, 2021, the government has amended the IDEL Regulation so that the COVID-19 period will now end on January 1, 2022. This program provides employees with up to three days of paid leave because of certain reasons related to COVID-19, such as being sick with COVID-19, going for a COVID-19 test, or going to get vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, at the end of August, the government extended the operation of paid IDEL until December 31, 2021. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/covid-19-worker-income-protection-benefit\">program<\/a> provides employees with up to three days of paid leave because of certain reasons related to COVID-19.
