Hiring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Miller Thomson\u2019s Toronto and Vaughan offices hire approximately 10-12 students in their second year of law school for the 2L summer program. Students who apply through the Toronto recruitment process should indicate in their cover letter which of our two offices they are applying to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Over the summer, our students are given the opportunity to work on a variety of corporate and advocacy assignments, including research and drafting, due diligence, commissioning oaths, assisting with litigation matters, document review and preparation, as well as assisting with a variety of transactions.  Our non-rotational Summer Program allows students the flexibility to pursue their interests in any of the five major practice areas (corporate, litigation, real estate, administrative specialties and tax).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students are encouraged to seek out the work and experiences that will give them the most insight into the practice of law at Miller Thomson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To help students get the most from their summer experience, each student is paired with a mentor to help them navigate Firm life.  Our mentors are a significant point of contact for students and help answer questions and provide feedback and support.  Our Talent team remains on-hand throughout the summer to assist students with their professional development and to access the Firm\u2019s many resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the primary goals of the Summer Program is to enable students to develop the skills necessary to become successful lawyers.  Each student will receive a formal evaluation of their progress during the summer. Students are encouraged to seek feedback from the lawyers they are working with on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to a variety of assignments that students will be engaged in with our lawyers, Miller Thomson provides practical and substantive skills-based training. Some highlights of our student continuing legal education programming include seminars on a variety of advocacy and corporate topics, including, due diligence for transactions, incorporation and minute book reviews, legal research and writing, Small Claims proceedings, drafting pleadings, preparing and attending motions, professionalism, practice management and public speaking, to name a few. Our students are also encouraged to attend all firm-wide in-house continuing legal education seminars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social and Charitable Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All work and no play isn\u2019t much fun, so we encourage students to actively participate in a variety of charitable and social events during the summer, including: Big Bike Ride for Heart and Stroke; United Way campaign; Bay Street summer volleyball tournament; student and mentor team-building events; as well as other informal and formal get-togethers with other firm members.  Past activities have included a city scavenger hunt, axe-throwing, baseball game, ping-pong tournament, a welcome barbecue, and our summer social.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hiring<\/a><\/a><\/a><\/a><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Toronto and Vaughan offices hire students through the articling process governed by the Law Society of Ontario. We have now filled all articling positions for the 2026\/2027 articling year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our students are exposed to a wide variety of work during their articling year. Students will typically assist and accompany lawyers on discoveries, hearings, trials, mediations, commercial deal closings and client meetings. Students are also assigned and have carriage of Small Claims Court files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Students may also have the opportunity to participate in a secondment arranged by our office. In the past, students have been on secondment at the Ontario Securities Commission, Ontario Labour Relations Board, and other large corporate clients and charities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social & Charitable Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We encourage our students to participate in all aspects of firm life. In the past, we have arranged social and charitable activities including: bowling night; ping pong; Habitat for Humanity builds; and a BBQ. We also have \u201cCall to the Bar\u201d \u2014 a regular get-together with all the professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of our support structure, not only are students paired with a partner who acts as their principal, they are also paired with an associate who acts as a mentor. We make every effort to assign a mentor who, we think, will fit well with the student\u2019s interests and background. Members of the Student Committee, as well as the Professional Development Department, are also on-hand to help students through their articling year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We also continue to evaluate our students\u2019 progress through two formal evaluation processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Throughout articling, students will continue their professional development with additional continuing legal education programing designed specifically to help them develop practical legal skills. As with the summer program, students are invited to attend all firm-wide and practice-specific continuing legal education seminars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
