Hiring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Miller Thomson\u2019s Waterloo office hires three students who have completed their first or second year of law school for our summer program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our summer program allows students to experience the working environment at our firm before starting their articling year. There is no formal rotation over the summer. Our students handle a variety of assignments, ranging from research, drafting documents, and assisting with litigation and corporate transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our students are always welcome to join our lawyers and observe proceedings. Since we do not have a formal work allocation system, students are encouraged to be entrepreneurial and to seek work and experiences of interest to them. In this way, our program provides students with a greater insight into Miller Thomson and the practice of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the Student Committee are also on-hand to help students through the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We encourage our students to take ownership of their work, and seek feedback from the lawyers they are working with on a continuing basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the various assignments engaged in by our students, our office offers training in substantive law and practical skills-based training. Some highlights of our student continuing legal education programming include seminars on Small Claims Court proceedings, drafting pleadings, legal research, legal writing, motions, corporate services, litigation, professionalism, practice management and public speaking. Our students are also encouraged to attend all firm-wide in-house continuing legal education seminars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Rotations\/Student Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our students are exposed to a wide variety of experiences during their articling year. Students participate in three formal rotations in litigation, corporate and \u201cfloater\u201d \u2014 the latter being a combination of litigation and corporate. Our students are given the opportunity to, among other things, assist and accompany lawyers to discoveries, hearings, trials, mediations, commercial deal closings and client meetings. Students are also assigned and have full carriage of Small Claims Court files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social Activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We encourage our students to participate in all aspects of firm life, including the firm\u2019s social activities and student-specific activities through the local law associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentoring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As part of our student support structure, articling students are paired with a partner who acts as their articling principal. Other members of the Student Committee also act as resources and liaisons to students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We evaluate our students\u2019 progress through a formal evaluation process, which occurs mid-way through the articling program term (usually in January).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professional Development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Throughout articling, students continue their professional development with additional continuing legal education programs designed specifically for them. As in the summer program, students are invited to attend all firm-wide and practice-specific continuing legal education seminars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
