Dave Krebs discusses “The Road to Digital Sovereignty \u2014 Implications of a Made-In-Canada Approach,” on May 13, 2025 at the IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nIn the face of U.S. tariffs and with the corresponding shift in Canada\u2019s trade relationship with the United States, voices calling for a plan to secure Canada\u2019s digital sovereignty and self-determination are growing within and outside of government. Anticipated changes to Canada’s privacy, cybersecurity\u00a0and AI legislation (Bills C-26 and C-27) had died on the Order paper with the prorogation of Parliament. Once Parliament resumes, it is anticipated that the new government will pick these issues back up and aim to progress the passing of laws to strengthen and update\u00a0the legal landscape. From a practical perspective, implementation of a made-in-Canada approach must face the reality of an interconnected cross-border technology supply chain, among many other issues when considering de-coupling from the United States. This session will explore the current legal environment as well as\u00a0the legal and practical implications of implementing a meaningful strategy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
