Anyone charged with an offence has the right to a lawyer and the right to a speedy trial — but Peter Bogacki said it doesn’t look that way from the inside of his jail cell in Fort Saskatchewan. Bogacki, who is serving a 90-day sentence for unlawfully being in a dwelling-house, is one of dozens of Albertans in recent months who had to obtain a court order forcing the government to pay for his defence lawyer after being denied coverage by the provincial legal aid plan.
