Gal Smolar is a Canadian and Israeli qualified business lawyer at Miller Thomson. As a trusted advisor, Gal is dedicated to offering entrepreneur and investor clients practical legal advice to help them solve real problems. He focuses on technology companies and has experience working across borders, markets and industries around the globe. In his day-to-day activities, Gal embraces new ideas and technology based tools in order to efficiently respond to his clients’ needs in constantly changing and challenging markets.
Gal has a wide high technology experience gained from over 20 years of focusing on financing of technology companies and technology transactions. He began his legal career in 1997 as an in-house legal team member for IBM Global Services. Gal was involved in early stage corporate investments as well as in negotiating software projects and strategic outsourcing agreements globally.
In 2000, Gal joined an Israeli law firm where he represented general partners in the formation of their funds and its portfolio company investments. Gal also spent five years in the Netherlands representing multinational venture capital funds. He led the formation of the first Israeli life science focused venture capital fund (2001) and in 2008 formed Russia’s first technology venture capital fund.
In 2009, Gal moved to Canada and has been involved in the formation of Canadian technology accelerators and investment funds, acted for local and foreign venture capital funds and angel investors and participated as either company counsel or investor counsel, in many exciting M&A transactions of Vancouver based startups. Gal operates an emerging and innovative practice serving the entrepreneurial needs of his clients.
