Overview
Derek earned his J.D. at the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to entering law school, Derek earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at UBC. He also obtained a Cultural Competency certificate at UBC, a program which looks to educate law students about the impacts of the law on the Indigenous community in Canada.
Derek was involved in the law school’s community as a member of the Indigenous Law Students Association (ILSA). Derek served as the 3rd Year Representative on the Executive Committee of ILSA for the 2019-20 year. He helped organize ILSA’s Annual Reception & Fundraiser event, which raised money for bursaries for Indigenous law students.
During his time in law school, Derek participated in the Indigenous Community Legal Clinic (ICLC). The ICLC provides free legal services to the Indigenous community and offers students a chance to gain direct client experience in a range of different legal areas.
During his undergraduate summers at UBC, Derek worked in his hometown of North Battleford, Saskatchewan for an organization that provided subsidized housing programs for people in need.
In his free time, Derek enjoys movies, art, gaming, and spending time with his two cats.
