FinTech

Overview

“FinTech” is the combination of financial services and technology.  FinTech legal matters will often involve a technology company (either a start-up or an established player) becoming involved in the financial services industry, either independently or in partnership with one or more financial institutions.

FinTech has or has the potential to impact all types of financial services, including payments and cards, person-to-person remittances, insurance, wealth management, personal lending, point-of-sale financing to consumers, corporate finance, etc.

The Miller Thomson FinTech Working Group is a multi-disciplinary group which provides a full range of legal services in connection with FinTech matters, including the following:

  • advice with respect to business models, strategies and partnerships
  • financial services regulatory advice
  • other regulatory advice (e.g. privacy, CASL, securities regulation, consumer protection, etc.)
  • commercial, procurement and technology agreements
  • data protection and cybersecurity
  • consumer agreements, forms and other documentation
  • transactions including M&A, IPOs, joint ventures, private equity and venture capital financings, strategic alliances and outsourcings
  • marketing and advertising
  • intellectual property issue including patents, licensing agreements and due diligence
