What is The Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship?

The purpose of The Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through involvement in extracurricular activities and have made significant contributions of time and energy to community service programmes.

The Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship is a long-term, ongoing initiative funded by The Miller Thomson Foundation. It annually awards one-year scholarships of approximately $3,000 to 100 recipients within Canada. The number of scholarships and the dollar amount is determined annually by the Foundation's Board of Governors.  The Co-Chairman of the Board of Governors are The Rt. Hon. John N. Turner, P.C., C.C., Q.C. and Gary G. Campbell, Q.C..

Eligibility

Students must:

  • be attending a Canadian secondary school, planning on entering a Canadian post-secondary institution in the Fall to pursue a course of study within Canada leading to a degree or diploma from an accredited community college or university.  Applicants must obtain a Secondary School Diploma.
  • must be a Canadian citizen and/or a permanent resident of Canada.
  • have maintained a minimum grade average of 87% in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
  • must provide school transcripts for grades 10, 11, and in-progress Grade 12 grades.
  • Quebec students should apply in their final year of CEGEP planning on attending a Canadian university.

NOTE: The Miller Thomson Foundation, assisted by the University of Alberta, will be supporting (5) Miller Thomson Foundation Entrance Leadership Scholarships at the University of Alberta in the amount of $3,000.00 each. Any student proposing to attend U of A should apply through the U of A Entrance Leadership Scholarship Competition or contact awards@ualberta.ca. This will not prevent students from applying both through the U of  A and the Miller Thomson website, if students are uncertain of which school they plan to attend.

 

What are the Selection Criteria?

In addition to the candidate's academic abilities, the Board of Governors will evaluate the candidate's contribution to their school and their community through their involvement in extracurricular activities.  Contributions to the community may be demonstrated by involvement in local clubs, organizations and community activities.

Why Has This Foundation Been Created?

Since Miller Thomson's inception over 54 years ago, one of the firm's core philosophies has been the active contribution of its lawyers to the well-being of the communities it serves, through support of public and social service programmes.  The firm has created this Foundation with the main purpose of funding The Miller Thomson Foundation National Scholarship Programme. It represents the commitment of the firm to recognize and support the achievement of a post-secondary education by young people in Canada.

 

What is the Timing? 

Each year the National Scholarship programme is launched on December 1st. All applications must be submitted on-line by  March 1st, of each year. The Scholarship Recipients are notified via mail in late June of each year. As well, an announcement is placed in a national newspaper listing the scholarship recipients and this information is also listed on the Recipients List page.

 

How Does a Student Apply?

All supporting documents (transcripts, letters of reference, etc.) must be mailed to the address below on or before March 1st, 2012. NOTE: Students must write their On-Line Confirmation Number on the bottom left corner of the envelope. As well, please ensure that your Full Name and return address appear on the top left corner of the envelope.
