2015 Summer Student, 2016-2017 Articling Student, Vancouver

Miller Thomson has been an excellent place to be a summer and articling student. What first drew me to Miller Thomson as a summer student was the people. From my first interview, it became apparent that this firm was both different and special.

As a summer student and continuing throughout my articles, Miller Thomson has provided me with a steady balance of challenging but rewarding work. To ensure success, Miller Thomson provided me with steady and required support. This was in the form of both formal mentorship as well as informal mentorship. The overall articling experience is further enriched by the willingness of lawyers to engage with students, creating a positive learning environment. They provide background related to the task at hand with the expectation that greater details specific to a file will lead to more valuable contributions by students. Additionally, the firm’s continuous commitment to personal and professional training sets it apart from other Canadian law firms.

Most recently, the Vancouver office of Miller Thomson has moved to a new open-concept space. This space is cutting edge and like no other! Most importantly for summer and articling students, the new Miller Thomson space nurtures a collaborative and collegial environment amongst staff, students, and lawyers.

Miller Thomson provides a supportive, entrepreneurial environment with many opportunities to get involved in a wide range of matters during articling year. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of projects I was asked to assist with over the past year, and felt like I was given work that actually added value.

Rotating through both litigation and solicitor work really helped me to make an informed decision on my career path, and was a fantastic way to get to know everyone in the Calgary office. On that note, it is also a wonderful group of people. I have done work for nearly every partner and associate in the Calgary office (as well as many individuals from our other offices) and feel very fortunate to be working among such a great group.

I have truly enjoyed being part of the Miller Thomson team. As an articling student, I was exposed to a wide variety of practice areas which, as a junior associate, has allowed me to determine the areas of law I am most interested in. The firm has encouraged me to explore those areas that have peaked my interest.

The articling students are provided with a true hands-on approach. I have been involved in files from start to finish and have gained valuable experience including conducting client interviews, being involved in corporate transactions, appearing at chambers, conducting examination in chief and cross examination, drafting wills, and drafting corporate documents.

Access to the national firm resources has allowed me to explore niche areas of law outside of the scope of my immediate office while still maintaining the close relationships I have formed in my year at the Saskatoon office. I could not be more excited about my future with Miller Thomson.

Summering at Miller Thomson has provided me with the opportunity to experience a wide variety of legal practices.  Not only have I gained exposure to many different areas of law, but I have done so under the supervision of superb lawyers. Working under leaders in the legal industry has not only been a rewarding experience, but one that I feel has already contributed to my overall development as a lawyer.

From the moment I started in the office, I was entrusted with doing meaningful work on a number of files. I have attended discoveries, court proceedings, meetings with clients on a variety of subject matter, as well as drafted a variety of court and transactional documents. Miller Thomson has been everything that I hoped it would be when I accepted my offer, and I continue to be consistently challenged on a daily basis. This is truly a special firm, and I feel fortunate to be here every day.

As a first year law student, Miller Thomson provided me with a background of vast practice areas such as Aboriginal law, real estate, securities, economic development, commercial litigation, etc. As a member of a national firm, there are so many resources available to you in order to learn and grow as a student and a professional and I am grateful to have an opportunity to explore them all.

My favourite part about the Vancouver office has been the people I get to work with every day. The mentorship between partners, associates, students and staff is truly invaluable. Their support has really pushed me to further my legal career in more ways than I expected of myself. I have accepted a summer position in the 2018 year solely because of the great experiences I have had this summer.

Miller Thomson offered me exposure to various practice areas that enabled me to find my niche.  I was encouraged at the outset to seek work that interested and challenged me.  I was offered the support I needed to ensure that I succeeded in my practice.

The entrepreneurial spirit at Miller Thomson is unmatched, and the “open door” policy promotes learning in a team environment.

My summer at Miller Thomson was an amazing experience. From the first week of my internship, I was involved in complex files, both in the Tax and Estate Planning Department. The whole time I worked closely with partners, benefiting from their professional and life advices. In addition, I was entrusted to go meet clients on my own, deal with fiscal authorities, and draft complex legal documents. For instance, I had the chance to manage a case from its beginning to the end, when I settled the case with the provincial fiscal authorities.  As a young law student, the learning curve is quite steep. However, every partner I worked with made sure that they have given me proper feedback so I can improve and contribute to the success of the firm.

I feel very proud of being at Miller Thomson and spending one summer confirmed what I already thought: Miller Thomson is different from other firms. The firm pushes you to be better, to challenge yourself, and to be proud of the work you have done. Both the expectations and the quality standards are high, but the reward you get at the end is worth it. Finally, the students I have met this summer became my friends, both at work and in my real life. We have all developed a lovely chemistry; a chemistry that encouraged us to help each other when needed.

2017 Summer Student, 2018-2019 Articling Student, Edmonton

Following my first year of law school, working at Miller Thomson offered me an incredible opportunity to expand and apply my knowledge while doing meaningful legal work. Being a summer student in the Edmonton office enabled me to work with an incredible team of highly skilled and knowledgeable lawyers, legal assistants and other staff on a wide variety of different files from personal injury litigation to commercial real estate transactions. In doing so I have had the opportunity to do legal research and draft pleadings, as well as attend client meetings and court appearances.

What originally drew me to Miller Thomson is also a primary reason why this summer has been such an amazing experience for me and that is the people. The level of support, encouragement and camaraderie that I felt between the lawyers, my fellow students and staff fostered a very enjoyable work environment in which I felt valued and was encouraged to challenge myself on a daily basis.

Miller Thomson provided me with ample opportunities to develop my legal toolbox throughout my articling year.  While the learning curve from law school to private practice was steep, the partners and associates I worked with were supportive during my articling term and continue to be mentors to me in my career as an associate.

The areas of law I was engrossed in were numerous: Corporate commercial litigation, privacy and access to information, adult guardianship, personal injury, medical malpractice, and wills and estates to name a few. The highlight of my articling year was being able to junior on two civil jury trials.

My articling year set me up to become an associate and I am excited to continue to develop and progress in my profession at Miller Thomson.

Miller Thomson has provided me with an invaluable summer experience. Over the four months, I was able to get involved on a number of different files that allowed me to interact directly with clients, providing me with the opportunity to further develop communication and problem-solving skills which are crucial to a legal career. Through my engagement in different practice areas at the firm, I was able to gain valuable insight into not only my strengths, but also where my interests lie. In my experience, the lawyers at Miller Thomson are open to hearing students’ views on legal issues in a particular file and they encourage questions to further support student learning. Additionally, the firm has various events and activities in which I was able get involved in outside of the office for building a rapport with clients and other members of the firm. Finally, Miller Thomson truly does seek to provide the students with a wholesome experience where they can get involved in as many aspects of legal service as they wish to, including the opportunity to attend discoveries, motions, client meetings, community events, and team sports activities.
